Fried Oyster Mushroom Sandwich

The FUN Kitchen

Ingredients (for wet mix)

  • 1⁄2 cup all purpose flour
  • 3⁄4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

Ingredients (for dry mix)

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

Directions

Take your oyster mushrooms out the package, pull apart to desired size, rinse well, season and sit to the side.

Make wet batter. Place 1⁄2 cup of all purpose flour in a large mixing bowl along with garlic powder, onion powder, and sea salt. Add in milk and mix well. Your batter should be the right consistency to coat mushrooms; not too thick and not too runny. Set aside.

Make dry mix. Place 1 cup of all purpose flour, garlic powder, paprika, and onion powder in a mixing bowl or ziplock bag mix until fully combined. Set aside.

Grab your frying pan, add and heat oil.

When oil is hot enough, coat each oyster mushroom in the wet batter then in dry mix until evenly coated. Note: do not go back and forth between the wet and dry batter to prevent over breading, it will not fry well!

Carefully place mushrooms in oil allowing mushrooms to fry for about 3 – 4 minutes until evenly browned. Remove done mushrooms from the oil and place on a plate cover with a paper towel.

Serve with your favorite dipping sauces, on top of a salad, or along with your favorite sides for dinner!

Pro tip: season mushrooms, wet, and dry mix well for added flavor.

Vegan Chef Rai Lewis has a passion for displaying the creativity and satisfaction of vegetable cuisine. Rai believes in healthy living in not just food but in mind, body, and heart and enjoys spreading joy in every room she enters. Noticing the big difference in food offerings across the neighborhoods around Philadelphia, Rai started a vegan food company called the FUN Kitchen–FUN is an acronym for Feasible Understandable and Nourishing–with a mission to create access to healthier food. Since 2017, FUN Kitchen has been breaking down the stereotypes of healthy food using vegan cuisines as a vehicle to educate, uplift, and support the community.
